One of the beautiful things about having my birthday at the beginning of the year, is that it’s the perfect time to reflect on what I want to achieve for the year.

Let me tell you a story…

My parents live in a small town on NSW’s mid north coast. There are two roundabouts, no traffic lights and they are surrounded by National Park.

For our afternoon drinks we have guests that include laughing kookaburras, wongas and kangaroos. They don’t come for the drinks, they are more interested in my Mum’s vege patch and the worms in the garden.

Nearby, there is a very special beach that has a very sacred healing energy.

Right at the end of the beach are amazing rock pools, rock formations and interesting shells and coral that have been washed up.

This is where I recalibrate. It’s where I settle and regroup. I sit under a tree for hours and hours … and hours. I get there early in the morning and go home at lunch time.

My mum asks, ‘What do you do there?’ This is what I do:

  • Just sit.
  • Stare are the blue water.
  • Stare at the sky and clouds.
  • Watch the waves crash on the rocks.
  • Use my macro lens and take photos of tiny shells and coral.
  • Do ephemeral art (which is so transient at high tide).
  • Sit in gratitude.
  • Swim.

While we don’t have the luxury to do this all the time, I just know that it’s so important to incorporate these things into our lives. It can’t be just once a year that we sit under a tree at the beach and daydream.

At home I have my rock at the beach where I sit, but at times I get too busy for that.

So one of my intentions for this year is to make the time do simple things that are filled with pure joy – just like sitting under the tree at the beach.

Here is a birthday message for you.
